As I have experiences with hosteling from previous trips, I went online to look for a hostel that was accessible to the subway and at least near to the usual touristy spots. That was when I came to know about Broadway Hotel and Hostel in the Upper West Side of New York.
The hostel is about two blocks from the subway, conveniently located on West 101 Street and Broadway, and close to several shops and restaurants. There were a lot of backpackers lounging in the lobby, I believe to get connected to the wifi as you won't have access once you get to your room. The hallways leading to the rooms are narrow but clean with shared bathrooms along the way. The rooms could either be with one or two bunk beds with a sink on a corner. I know this because I moved from one room to the other when I decided to extend my stay in New York. What is good about Broadway Hostel is that unlike the others I've been to where you will be sharing your room with 6 to 10 people, you only have one other roommate. I got to meet about two other backpackers, on separate dates, and at some point had the the entire room to myself.
